Assistant Director of Shelter and Housing Services

Charter House Coalition Emergency Shelter for Individuals meets every individual where they are, regardless of circumstances, and provides support and encouragement that helps to better lives. We are looking for an experienced and energetic person to join our mission as we face and take on the continued demand for complex social service support in Addison County. 

Candidates will be looking to significantly impact how persons experiencing homelessness navigate a complicated system and be familiar with, and passionate about, the delivery of essential services and improving people’s lives by respectfully endorsing their strengths and regularly working through challenges alongside of persons in need. 

The Assistant Director of Shelter & Housing Services is responsible for the oversight and management of our 24/7 Emergency Shelter and will inherently understand the comprehensive array of human service programs and resources available to individuals and households experiencing homelessness. The successful candidate will lead a diverse staff and group of volunteers in providing emergency and temporary shelter, essential means, service coordination and appropriate referrals for both unhoused and housed households. This role is responsible for consistent review and implementation of services being offered and will assist in developing new programs as needs emerge. The Assistant Director of Shelter & Housing Services is responsible for program planning, organizing, training, outcome measurements and reporting. Other responsibilities include ensuring that all services comply with funding, state, federal and local regulations, certifications, and licensing requirements. The Assistant Director of Shelter and Housing Services will actively see to the daily operations of the shelter and will regularly represent our organization within partnerships and community outreach collaborations involving homelessness and supportive housing initiatives. Reports to the Executive Director. 

Requirements

  • Passionate about our mission and able to confidently promote and communicate the philosophy, mission and values associated with removing the many layers of stigma surrounding the vulnerable population(s) we serve to both external and internal stakeholders. 
  • Minimum 10 years of professional experience overall, with a minimum of five years of senior-leadership experience within a non-profit, supervising staff and managing day to day operations.
  • Strong relationship builder and able to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing. A confident and flexible style will best fit the variety of communication styles to be encountered.
  • Willingness to approach each circumstance in a solution-oriented manner.
  • Experience in program planning and familiarity with grant administration support.
  • Advanced computer skills involving Microsoft 365, social media, data management and analysis systems and electronics.
  • Committed to continuously learning within the field of social services.

Outreach and Housing Case Manager(s)

The Charter House Coalition Emergency Shelter for Individuals is accepting resumes for experienced case managers who are well versed in working with a diverse and marginalized population. Those who can demonstrate successful identification and use of state and local opportunities for persons experiencing homelessness or whom may be at risk of becoming homeless will be given first consideration.

All candidates will be passionate about the delivery of essential services and improving people’s lives by respectfully endorsing their strengths and regularly working alongside with those we serve.

Requirements

  • Passionate about our mission and able to confidently promote and communicate the philosophy, mission and values associated with removing the many layers of stigma surrounding the vulnerable population(s) we serve to both external and internal stakeholders.
  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience overall, with a minimum of 3 years dedicated to case management in a social services setting. 
  • Demonstration of professional verbal and written communication skills
  • Must have incredible integrity, positive energy, urgency and the ability to model appropriate boundaries at all times.
  • Common sense, grit and works diligently

The Housing Case Manager provides initial assessment and assistance to individuals and households both who reside at Charter House and in the greater community. Persons served may be social service referrals by building a supportive relationship with individuals whom reside at Charter House,  or seek assistance in finding permanent housing. The Housing Case Manager consistently works cooperatively with all other Charter House staff, outside service providers, partner agencies and volunteers.

Shelter Staff – Essential Service Providers

The Charter House Coalition Emergency Shelter for Individuals is looking to hire 1-2 persons to join our team of Essential Service providers. The primary responsibility of this amazing group is to maintain a safe and consistent environment for our guests and to help build a trusting rapport with those we serve both in our shelter and throughout the county.

If you 1) are committed to helping all persons in need; 2) can demonstrate the ability to exercise kindness, respect, and professional boundaries under all circumstances; 3) are comfortable and familiar with de-escalation methods and crisis management; 4) value honesty over ego; 5) can clearly communicate verbally and in writing; 6) are energetic and possess a fair amount of grit; 7) can work independently, but thrive with like-minded colleagues and volunteers; 8) can maintain an organized and clean work environment; 9) can be flexible and 10) are interested and familiar with the current housing crisis and have the willingness to continue learning on behalf of those we serve, then we want to hear from you!

Experience working or volunteering at an emergency shelter or in a similar setting is appreciated but not required. Training will be provided. Applicants can apply for a part-time or full-time position; we are currently accepting applications for all shifts, including awake overnight and weekend shifts. Charter House is open 365 days a year, and we answer the needs of those seeking emergency assistance 24 hours a day.
